Zion National Park Camping

Zion National Park has two large campgrounds, one of which remains open throughout the winter. Watchman and South Campgrounds are located just within the south entrance to the park. Overnight camping fees are collected at the self-registration station at each campground.

Watchman Campground is located on a bench above North Fork Virgin River .4 miles north of Springdale and just south of the South Campground. Watchman Campground's 170 campsites include fire pits, picnic tables, and water, as well as central bathrooms with flush toilets and a central dump station. The campground is partly shaded and provides great views into Zion National Park. Laundry, groceries, and gas are all available within one mile of the campground. Watchman campground is closed from November through March.

South Campground, located half a mile from Springdale, provides Zion campers with an additional 180 campsites. This campground is situated along the Virgin River and provides ample shade and spectacular scenery. The campsites have fire pits, picnic tables, water, central bathrooms with flush toilets and a central dump station. Laundry, groceries, and gas are all available within one mile of the campground. South Campground is open year-round.

Both of these campgrounds fill up very quickly so you will need to arrive early in the day if you want to get a site. Gathering firewood is prohibited within the park so be sure to bring all of your firewood with you. Neither of these parks provides RV hookups and stays are limited to 14 days.

Lava Point Campground is a more primitive campground located in the northern section of the park. There are six sites on a first come first serve basis. The sites have fire pits, picnic tables, and pit toilets. There is no water available and no fee is charged for camping there

Group Camping

There are group sites available in both the Watchman and South Campgrounds and reservations can be made in advance by calling (800)365-2267.

Private Campgrounds and RV Camping

If you are looking for a more posh camping experience than you will want to look into staying at a private campground. These campgrounds offer amenities such as laundry, running water, RV hookups, and flush toilets. Many also have pools or playgrounds. These campgrounds accept reservations but typically charge higher fees than National & State Park campgrounds. There are private campgrounds located in the communities adjacent to the park. You may also choose to stay in St. George which is only a short drive from the park. St. George is home to several great RV parks and provides more shopping and entertainment options.

Backcountry Camping

Backcountry camping within Zion National Park is allowed on a limited basis, and a backcountry permit is required. The permit costs $5.00 per person per night and can be obtained in the visitor center. While you are at the visitor center you will want to check with the ranger about current trail conditions. To help protect the Zion wilderness, group size is limited to twelve individuals. Campfires are not allowed so you will want to bring along a camp stove if you plan to do any cooking. Please also remember to pack out all of your garbage and don't forget to take along plenty of water.
